Popular paints are substandard – Helsingborgs Dagblad

The result is disappointing: only four colors get a passing grade.

– There is such a failing grade for the industry. What is so sad is that this is the fifth test and it still looks so bad, says Karin Stenmar, environmental and climate manager at Folksam.

The colors have been rejected either have contained dangerous substances can cause cancer and affect fertility, or had such poor function that mold started growing on the walls after a short time. In many cases, both.

– Looking at a short period, fouling which affects an entire house. There is mold, algae and other things that also can damage the wood. It’s incredibly expensive to repaint and really not supposed to have to repaint every two years, says Karin Stenmar.

– What is so shocking is that there is information available about how to generate quality – and environmentally approved recipes of color, and yet, it is not. Okay if there had not been any knowledge, but now there is knowledge.

Even a year ago, halfway through the test, turned out three of the colors to be so bad that Folksam went out with a warning. All were low-colors, but the price seems really do not play any role in quality.

– An important aspect is that you do not have to buy a jättedyr color for it to be good. There is color in every price range that actually passes the test, says Karin Stenmar.

Two of the colors with impact on both quality and environmental impact is Vuosaari Tinova VX and Cuprinols Exterior paint plus. North Sea and Cuprinol are both trademarks of Akzo Nobel.

– There is a lot of our colors that come out badly in the test and we are looking at this right now, says Mats Nilsson, paint technical expert at AkzoNobel.

He believes that certain colors in their catalog already has improved since the colors used in the test is two years old.

– But it is regrettable that it looks the way it does, he says.

And that combine good colors that give good results and long lasting with a good environmental policy, according to Mats Nilsson is not easy.

– The paint industry could end stop everything that is dangerous in color but then you probably much worse results with regard to function, he said.
