Low expectations of Wallström – Helsingborgs Dagblad

The NPT entered into force in 1970 and the agreement is partly based on the non-nuclear weapon states do not undertake to develop or spread of nuclear weapons. The nations that have nuclear weapons should also commit to equip down. Wallström look however at present several potential trouble spots, and the Middle East, and Russia and the situation with the so-called battlefield nuclear weapons.

– Watch Syria and Iraq, and especially terrorist groups. I do not think we should underestimate their ability to actually be able to even imagine an option to use nuclear weapons or nuclear explosive devices. In the case of Russia, the threats made lately and it’s also something new. It bodes not well in the question of disarmament.

During the conference, Sweden will organize two seminars along with several other countries, including focusing on how women are affected.

TT: But How realistic is it to get by for example North Korea in such discussions?

– It was said about Iran and negotiations there too. It is clear that it looks gloomy, but Iran is an example where the world can gather and use diplomacy in a constructive way so it’s important inspiration.
