The government wants to reduce the number of counties in Sweden. Changes in population structure, lifestyles and socioeconomic conditions warrant such a reform considers the civilian Minister Ardalan Shekarabi (S).

Today, Sweden has 20 counties / regions but from 2019 the government wants them to be fewer. How many fewer would not be established, but according to the civilian minister should work to create new regions begin shortly. This he writes in Dagens Nyheter.

Shekarabi writes that the provincial division looked more or less the same since 1810. In recent years, however, some mergers occurred, 1997-98 was formed Region Skåne in a merger of Malmöhus and Kristianstad County and similarly Västra Götaland. Ten years ago there were plans for a more radical reduction in the number of counties and county councils and 2007 suggested Ansvarsutredningen a new division in Sweden in six regions. But then the question was lying on the ice. Until now.

recently in December 2017 believes civilian minister that it should be decided after county subdivision so that one or more regions will be formed in January 2019. The reform does not mean that you simultaneously want change the current responsibilities of the county councils, with one exception: the county councils should have the chance to take over the overall regional development responsibility. Today this is instead shared between several actors including county administrative boards, county and municipal cooperation bodies.

The government seems to continue like to extend a hand to other parties in parliament and in debate article writing civilian minister said that he and the government ambition is to council reform to take place in broad political collaboration.
