Without a definitive and unequivocal end to abortion resistance and moral conservatism in LGBTQ issues remain uphill for the Christian Democrats very steep.
Göran Hägglund’s decision to resign as Christian Democrat party leader was unexpected but not surprising. Hagglund faced the choice to resign now, to give the successor plenty of time for the next election, or commit to at least another four years.
After eleven years as party leader and eight years as Social Security, it is no surprise that he chooses to go. In that decision has Hagglund probably also weighed in that he failed to lift the Christian Democrats stable over the four percent hurdle to parliament.
Now resigns Göran Hägglund unsolicited and with flags flying. He has kept up the party, despite the rebellion attempt by the conservative wing. By being more popular than the portion of the electorate, he has also greatly contributed to the Christian Democrats still a parliamentary party. And the Alliance has Hagglund given the Christian Democrats political influence that far exceeds the election results and opinion polls. Henriksson is a group leader and possibly the one who can get broader support over the phalanx border. She is also a strong name for anyone who thinks it’s time for a female party leader. Thus advantage Henriksson.
Outside the parliamentary group is party secretary Acko Ankarberg Johansson, MEP Lars Adaktusson and the Mayor of Gothenburg David Lega possible candidates. Ebba Busch Thor is the moralkonservativas choice, but with her locks Party to questions about the Word of Life, abortion and LGBT.
The Christian Democrats have not overcome their internal divisions. Simply put, the party of two phalanges.
