Crashed into railing after theft attempt – Aftonbladet

The driver tried to steal a motorcycle when he was discovered by police.

After a joyride over Skanstullsbron collided driver with a cyclist and crashed straight into a bridge railing.

Now cared for the car driver and the cyclist in hospital for serious injuries.

The alarm about the serious accident came in to police at 10:55. A car had collided with a bicycle at Skanstullsbron in the southbound direction. Two people were taken to hospital.

Both have been seriously injured, police said.

– It can be life-threatening injuries, says Towe Hägg, press officer at the Stockholm police.

The driver should have been notified of a theft attempt earlier on Sunday and tried to run from the police when the accident occurred.

– We got the alarm about attempted motorcycle theft on Tjurbergsgatan and one of our patrols went there. When they met the car on the road they turned and followed the car. When they reached the scene of the accident, they noted that it was the same car, says Towe Hägg.

A witness describes how the car was chased by police before it crashed into the parapet.

– The drove at least 150 miles per hour. Police were maybe 100 feet behind and had chased it all the way from Gotgatan. They drove with blue lights but no sound sirens.



“As the movie”

Many cyclists and pedestrians were on the spot when the car crashed, according to the witness.

– The was like in the movies. It stank petrol and it became a huge cloud of sand. I dared not stay because of the fire risk.

Rescue Service are working to salvage the car from the scene. Traffic is currently turned off.
